Health and Safety

The Nervous System Edit is an education and training program. It is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it does not replace care from a doctor or other qualified health professional.

The guide includes breath holds, reduced-volume breathing, mouth taping during sleep and breathing practice during hard exercise. These are safe for most healthy adults when done as written, but they are not right for everyone.

Check with your doctor before starting if you:

  • are pregnant or think you may be pregnant

  • have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, or have had a stroke

  • have epilepsy or a history of seizures or fainting

  • have asthma, COPD or another lung condition

  • have sleep apnoea, or have been told you snore heavily

  • have kidney disease, diabetes or sickle cell disease

  • have a panic disorder or another mental health condition

  • take medication that affects your heart, breathing or blood pressure

  • are under 18

Every time you practise:

  • Stop if you feel dizzy, light-headed, faint, numb or unwell, and breathe normally.

  • Never practise breath holds in or near water, while driving or operating machinery, or anywhere losing focus could be dangerous.

  • Never combine breath holds with intense exercise.

  • Don't use mouth tape if you can't breathe comfortably through your nose, have been drinking alcohol, or have sleep apnoea.

  • Work to the first clear urge to breathe, not your limit.

You take part voluntarily and are responsible for your own health and safety while using the guide. To the extent the law allows, Beau Mackey is not liable for any injury or loss arising from the use of this program.
